If your spouse has been dying for the new iPad - by all means, go ahead and surprise them. Unfortunately, these types of gifts aren't in the "average" budget. Maybe you just wanted to get a "traditional" anniversary gift. Here is the traditional list of the first five anniversary themes and some gift ideas. They are not separated in "his" and "hers" categories, since some gifts are perfect for any gender.

Year 1 is traditionally paper. While this may sound "boring", there are amazingly several fun and interesting gift ideas. Here are a few possibilities: magazine subscriptions, books, board games, puzzles. You can also give the gift of photos in a frame or album! A more expensive option is getting tickets for a trip. Origami and monogrammed stationery are also very personal gifts.

The traditional theme for year 2 is cotton. This option is great for giving clothes. If you're planning a weekend getaway, gift some towels or beach blankets.

Three years is leather. Select from simple gifts such as jackets, shoes or boots. Don't forget accessories like gloves, belt, wallets, purses and briefcases. Leather bound diaries or books are also very nice. Luggage or furniture is also a great idea!

The 4 year anniversary tradition is silk or linen.  Great gift ideas are lingerie, pyjamas and bed sheets but you can also get linen shirts and pants or placement mats

Year 5's traditional theme is wood. Photo frames, plants and other wooden gifts are great ideas.
